la rocks!

So by now you’ve all heard we had a big ol’ earthquake today. I was sitting at my desk and when the shaking started, my coworker (from New York City) and I (from Cleveland) looked at one another, and said “what do we do in an earthquake?” Finally, I suggested that we should perhaps back away from the window. We learned later that we should have dove under some heavy furniture. Great–the only furniture in our office was some flimsy IKEA desks that would collapse if a dictionary fell on them.

It made the morning more exciting, at least.

Graphic designers love critiquing other peoples’ designs (because we know we can do them better) and we also love analyzing the evolution of logos. This clever site examines the unholy unions that could have possibly created some of our most famous marks. I especially enjoy the one shown above, as it incorporates two of my favorite things on the planet, who have sued one another endlessly.

Last night’s elimination was a debacle. I cannot believe the best male dancer was eliminated! Yes, Will is history. He is a wonderful dancer who studies under Debbie Allen–I can’t imagine what people were thinking! It isn’t about being Mr Personality. To be honest, he seemed the quietest and least exuberant of the guys–but is that a fault or are the others just very animated people? It is supposed to be about being the best dancer. I am sad we won’t be seeing Will (and his lovely chest!) any longer.

Joshua (pictured above) is my favorite–but I didn’t think he would win against Will, as he is not as trained a dancer. But he may have a chance now–he is better than Mark and Twitch, in my opinion. Of the girls, I think Kaytee has the best chance, she is a lovely dancer.

file under: wtf?

Since I am a therapist, people’s behavior on the internet really interests me. As the long-time member of several internet communities (remember newsgroups? I do!), I have seen some really bizarre stuff. But the one I seem to have the most trouble with is the control-freak-forum-owner-on-a-rampage. I have been watching one over the last week, whose behavior is consistently rude and intolerant. Her latest action was to kick everyone off the forum who does not wish or is not able to communicate in English (she had several thriving forums within the forum who were mostly non-English speakers). Her reason? Because she could not understand what they were saying, and someone criticised her in Spanish. She was so neurotic about knowing what was being said, she ran each and every post through an on-line translator. And then announced that people could no longer speak foreign languages on her forum. A forum that uses the word “World” in its title, is not really of the world, I guess. As expected, the foreign-language speaking folks were mightily offended and upset–not so much because they couldn’t speak their language, but that they are not trusted to do so! And that is offensive.

This woman has a long, long history of intolerant behavior. She kicks people off her forum for the tiniest infractions. She appears to be a bitter and lonely person who probably has little power in her real life, and thus wields it heavily on her message board.

The thing she does not understand is that a message board is only as good as its members. You can have all the cool stuff in the world, but without the members, the board is nothing.

The other part of this equation is the members who put up with her. Though there are alternatives to this board, some people continue to stay and even praise her for her “dedication”. They are like people caught in an abusive relationship–afraid to leave, because they know once they do, they will never be allowed back. Putting up with maltreatment on an internet forum is silly–we all get enough in real life, I am sure!

concerts i’ve seen

So anyone who knows me, knows what a rocker chick I was when I was younger. I still am, in my heart. I was out tonight with some friends, and we were listening to a bar band that was playing a lot of songs I know, which got me to thinking about all the concerts I have seen in my lifetime. You could not grow up in Cleveland without rock being part of your soul. Well, my sister did, but she is a freak anyway, that lover of John Denver, Air Supply and Enya.

Here is my list–share yours!

Paul McCartney (6 times-Pittsburgh 89, Cleveland 90, Detroit and Cincinnati 1993, Anaheim 2002 and 2005). The Cleveland show was the most special to me–maybe because he was in my hometown but also because 80,000 fans were rocking out to “Hey Jude” with lighters held aloft. And Paul singing “Let It Be” on a hot July night with the rain softly falling was a spiritual moment. The 2005 Anaheim show was wonderful as well–I had 12th row seats :-) For me, there are Paul McCartney concerts and then there are everyone else.

U2 (2 times-Arrowhead Pond, Anaheim CA) Any U2 tour is great, I felt the Elevation Tour was especially so.

Ringo Starr (2 times-Blossom Music Center, Cleveland, OH) 2nd row for a Beatle! Ringo’s concerts are terrific fun and lots of great music!

Pretenders (Blossom Music Center) Chrissie Hynde in her hometown, Cuyahoga Falls (immortalized in My City Was Gone). A great concert by one of my all-time favorite bands.

Elton John (Blossom Music Center). This was in his Captain Fantastic days, before he started singing all that Disney shit.

Michael Stanley Band (5 times, Blossom Music Center) A band much beloved by Cleveland and the Heartland but not big elsewhere. I smoked my first cigarette at one of these concerts!

Midnight Oil (Nautica Stage, Cleveland OH) I hear that Peter Garrett (lead singer) is now in the Australian government. Too bad, he could whirl around on stage like a dervish and wrote some excellent, meaningful songs.

Badfinger (Cleveland) I really love this Beatles-related band, and I am glad I got to see them. Pete Ham was long dead, but the other members were all there.

311 (Blossom Music Center)

World Party (Blossom Music Center) I liked this band–whatever became of them?

Souixie and the Banshees (Cleveland Agora) The Agora is a legendary concert venue and I am glad I got to go there a few times. Souixie and the Banshees were a very cool band, arty and punky.

10,000 Maniacs (Blossom Music Center)

Ziggy Marley (Nautica Stage) It was here I saw the biggest joint in my life. It was like the size of a rolled up sock.

Breathless (Cleveland Agora) One of the first concerts I attended. Breathless was a Cleveland band that achieved a good deal of popularity with their song “Takin’ it Back”.

Donnie Iris (Blossom Music Center)

Indigo Girls (Portland Zoo) A fun, laid back concert. I never saw so many Birkenstocks in one place.

reason number 2,374 that i live in los angeles

There is no place more beautiful to see a concert than the venerable Hollywood Bowl. I love sitting under the stars, the searchlights overhead (how Hollywood that feels!) and the sun setting, painting the mountains pink and purple. Amazing that the place is over 80 years old! You cant help but feel the ghosts of the legends who have stepped onto its stage–The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, The Doors, The Who, Simon & Garfunkle… probably any act who has ever undertaken a major tour has played here.

I attended a Mariachi concert with my friends–complete with fireworks!

the bunneeeez make cupcakez!!!

How much do I love this? Amy Sedaris (and her brother David) rock, and she especially rocks because she often lends her name to the House Rabbit Society, an organization that I volunteered with in the past (I helped establish a chapter in Ohio). This is actually a commercial for Microsoft, but OMG, the bunneez are just so cute! If I had a cupcake shop, it would be run by bunnz–and look just like this!

Phoenix saw the little chef hat and is pestering me for one now.

a list of beatles favorites

I guess I am in a mood to yak–two posts in one day! And what better subject to yak about than the Beatles, something always near and dear to me! I found this interesting questionnaire–feel free to answer it yourself, if you are a Beatles fan, too!

How did you become a Beatles fan? I heard “Band on the Run” on the radio when I was 11 years old, back in 1973. It was the first Beatles (related) album of many–and thus began a lifelong love. I guess you could say I was a Wings fan first.

Favorite Beatle Paul!

Why is he your favorite? I love his music–the musicality of it. Nothing can elevate my spirits like a McCartney song–except a whole new album of them! From them unrestrained joy of “Hi Hi Hi” to the quiet beauty of “For No One”, he just has such a gift for melody and how it can just soar (and take my soul along with it). He makes my ears smile.

Hottest Beatle Paul, especially during his early Wings career (see above!). Though this isn’t why I love him!

Favorite Album Abbey Road. Every note is brilliant. Every song a masterpiece. From start to finish, I consider this the Beatles’ finest work. The last album (it was recorded after “Let It Be”) was simply the icing on a legacy that no one will ever match.

Favorite John Song Imagine. The most gorgeous song ever written–and John always said the soft stuff was Paul! It has suffered some for being overplayed or used poorly (like in American Idol) but still is a haunting song. Favorite John Album–Imagine.

Favorite Paul Song Wow, I don’t know, it changes depending on my mood. “Hi Hi Hi” is my favorite rocker–best driving song there is. “Mull of Kintyre” is gorgeous–definitely a fave. I also love “I’ve Had Enough” and “Getting Closer”. My favorite McCartney album–Back to the Egg.

Favorite George Song Hm, hard to say, again. I love “Blow Away”–it was a big hit for him when I was in high school. “Isn’t It a Pity” is lovely. But I also love songs like “Crackerbox Palace”, where George’s wit comes shining through! Favorite George album–33 and a 1/3.

Favorite Ringo Song Photograph. Love the song and it makes me smile George worked on it with him.

Favorite overall song I used to say Hey Jude but maybe not so much anymore. I love them all, I dont have a favorite.

Favorite Beatles Movie Magical Mystery Tour. Best watched under the influence! Utterly insane with some of their best tunes.

Favorite Beatles instrument Paul’s Hofner bass.

Favorite Beatles Quote “You can’t reheat a souffle”–said by John on the idea of the Beatles reuniting.

Favorite band that’s not the Beatles U2

Favorite Beatle-related person (i.e. Brian Epstein, Yoko Ono, etc.) George Martin, their producer. He was instrumental in what they achieved–and had the foresight to sign them to EMI.

Favorite Beatle concert/performance Apple rooftop concert in “Let It Be”. Oh what I would have given to be down there on the street when that music started. I always laugh at the old farts who are irritated with the “noise”. Stupid people had no idea history was being made!

Favorite song by one Beatle about another “Here Today”–a poignant piece for John by the man who probably knew him better than anyone other than Yoko. Some of Paul’s finest lyrics. I also love George’s tribute to John, “All Those Years Ago”–he keeps it from being too sad by pointing out “you were the one that they said was so weird”.

Favorite Beatles bootleg The “Cold Cuts” (No Baloney) album by Paul. Some really great tracks on here he should have released. Also like “The Black Album”.

Favorite item in my collection My original “Let It Be” movie poster. And my white vinyl “Let It Be” album, a very rare copy.

Least favorite song by one Beatle about another John’s bitter missive to Paul, “How Do You Sleep”. It makes me clench up inside to hear it. And that started all the messages of beetles fucking beetles on album covers and what not, a juvenile one-upsmanship that no one wanted to see and both wished later they hadn’t done. But it survives for all eternity!

Least favorite Beatles song Revolution 9 and You Know My Name (look Up the Number). Both songs appear to be John using copious amounts of something.

the vinyl-is-better-than-cd argument

I just read this:

A recent study was done that tested people after listening to CDs for hours vs the same songs on vinyl for hours. The ones who listened to the CDs were more tired. They could not perform simple tasks as well. It is believed that the act of the brain having to fill in the blanks tires it out quickly. (Digital cds encode small bits of the sound wave as it travels, almost like one of those “fill in the dots” drawings. When the “sampling” of that wave is then reproduced, the brain hears only the bits and fills in the blanks) People who listened to the analog recordings were more relaxed and had lower heart rates and blood pressure than the ones who listened to CDs.

Interesting, eh? Of course, I am still firmly in the camp that states that vinyl sounds better than cds. Vinyl has a warm, rich sound that cds dont have. And the very first cds to come out–oh they are awful. I have an early “Rubber Soul” cd and it sounds so metallic and harsh. I should buy another one. And don’t even get me started on what we lost with the cheap-ass packaging–those crappy little jewel boxes that come unhinged and fall apart make me insane. But the real loss was the really cool album cover artwork. What would “Sgt Pepper” be without its pop art cover? And you used to get posters and cut outs and stickers–not to mention lyrics in a type size you could read without an electron microscope. One of the greatest pleasures of my teenage years was bringing home the new Wings album, unwrapping it and placing it on the turntable, cranking it up and then laying there and reading the lyrics as I digested Macca’s latest masterpiece. It just isn’t the same with CDs–they feel so much more throwaway. The discs are under my car seat (where they get scratched), their dumb jewel boxes in a broken jumble alongside them. A far cry from my record collection, stored carefully in a cabinet with plastic sleeves on each!

hot fashion in the city

So if the new Sex and the City movie doesn’t make the economy rebound, then we truly are in a mess. I mean, I was ready to tear out of there and head for the nearest Neiman’s (in my case, Beverly Hills). I absolutely covet the purple sunglasses I saw in the movie–but I know not yet who designs them or where I can find them–but I will track it down!

The movie did not disappoint! The overall message is “men come and go, and a lot of them suck, but girlfriends are forever!” And that is kinda true, you know. So grab your BFFs and check it out!
