I guess I am in a mood to yak–two posts in one day! And what better subject to yak about than the Beatles, something always near and dear to me! I found this interesting questionnaire–feel free to answer it yourself, if you are a Beatles fan, too!
How did you become a Beatles fan? I heard “Band on the Run” on the radio when I was 11 years old, back in 1973. It was the first Beatles (related) album of many–and thus began a lifelong love. I guess you could say I was a Wings fan first.
Favorite Beatle Paul!
Why is he your favorite? I love his music–the musicality of it. Nothing can elevate my spirits like a McCartney song–except a whole new album of them! From them unrestrained joy of “Hi Hi Hi” to the quiet beauty of “For No One”, he just has such a gift for melody and how it can just soar (and take my soul along with it). He makes my ears smile.
Hottest Beatle Paul, especially during his early Wings career (see above!). Though this isn’t why I love him!
Favorite Album Abbey Road. Every note is brilliant. Every song a masterpiece. From start to finish, I consider this the Beatles’ finest work. The last album (it was recorded after “Let It Be”) was simply the icing on a legacy that no one will ever match.
Favorite John Song Imagine. The most gorgeous song ever written–and John always said the soft stuff was Paul! It has suffered some for being overplayed or used poorly (like in American Idol) but still is a haunting song. Favorite John Album–Imagine.
Favorite Paul Song Wow, I don’t know, it changes depending on my mood. “Hi Hi Hi” is my favorite rocker–best driving song there is. “Mull of Kintyre” is gorgeous–definitely a fave. I also love “I’ve Had Enough” and “Getting Closer”. My favorite McCartney album–Back to the Egg.
Favorite George Song Hm, hard to say, again. I love “Blow Away”–it was a big hit for him when I was in high school. “Isn’t It a Pity” is lovely. But I also love songs like “Crackerbox Palace”, where George’s wit comes shining through! Favorite George album–33 and a 1/3.
Favorite Ringo Song Photograph. Love the song and it makes me smile George worked on it with him.
Favorite overall song I used to say Hey Jude but maybe not so much anymore. I love them all, I dont have a favorite.
Favorite Beatles Movie Magical Mystery Tour. Best watched under the influence! Utterly insane with some of their best tunes.
Favorite Beatles instrument Paul’s Hofner bass.
Favorite Beatles Quote “You can’t reheat a souffle”–said by John on the idea of the Beatles reuniting.
Favorite band that’s not the Beatles U2
Favorite Beatle-related person (i.e. Brian Epstein, Yoko Ono, etc.) George Martin, their producer. He was instrumental in what they achieved–and had the foresight to sign them to EMI.
Favorite Beatle concert/performance Apple rooftop concert in “Let It Be”. Oh what I would have given to be down there on the street when that music started. I always laugh at the old farts who are irritated with the “noise”. Stupid people had no idea history was being made!
Favorite song by one Beatle about another “Here Today”–a poignant piece for John by the man who probably knew him better than anyone other than Yoko. Some of Paul’s finest lyrics. I also love George’s tribute to John, “All Those Years Ago”–he keeps it from being too sad by pointing out “you were the one that they said was so weird”.
Favorite Beatles bootleg The “Cold Cuts” (No Baloney) album by Paul. Some really great tracks on here he should have released. Also like “The Black Album”.
Favorite item in my collection My original “Let It Be” movie poster. And my white vinyl “Let It Be” album, a very rare copy.
Least favorite song by one Beatle about another John’s bitter missive to Paul, “How Do You Sleep”. It makes me clench up inside to hear it. And that started all the messages of beetles fucking beetles on album covers and what not, a juvenile one-upsmanship that no one wanted to see and both wished later they hadn’t done. But it survives for all eternity!
Least favorite Beatles song Revolution 9 and You Know My Name (look Up the Number). Both songs appear to be John using copious amounts of something.
