la rocks!

So by now you’ve all heard we had a big ol’ earthquake today. I was sitting at my desk and when the shaking started, my coworker (from New York City) and I (from Cleveland) looked at one another, and said “what do we do in an earthquake?” Finally, I suggested that we should perhaps back away from the window. We learned later that we should have dove under some heavy furniture. Great–the only furniture in our office was some flimsy IKEA desks that would collapse if a dictionary fell on them.

It made the morning more exciting, at least.

There is no place more beautiful to see a concert than the venerable Hollywood Bowl. I love sitting under the stars, the searchlights overhead (how Hollywood that feels!) and the sun setting, painting the mountains pink and purple. Amazing that the place is over 80 years old! You cant help but feel the ghosts of the legends who have stepped onto its stage–The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, The Doors, The Who, Simon & Garfunkle… probably any act who has ever undertaken a major tour has played here.

I attended a Mariachi concert with my friends–complete with fireworks!

purple rain

I love this time of year in LA. The streets literally burst into a happy vision of vivid purple everywhere you look. It is jacaranda time! And when the blossoms are done, they flutter to the ground in a gentle violet snowstorm.

i’ll take a coffee with that

In LA, I think life happens on the freeways. People live, eat, drink, and die on them. Traffic consumes us here–you plan your day around it. Can I go to a doctor appointment in Santa Monica at 9 am? No way–has to be between 11:00 (morning rush hour is finally over) and 2:00 (evening traffic starts getting bad by 3:00). So everything is all about finding that perfect little window of time that allow you to proceed unheeded to your destination.

A month ago, a house fell off a truck and sat on the side of the freeway until taggers found it and sprayed “FOR RENT” on its side. Now this, courtesy of the LA Times.
